This is a reasonably thick mat, and makes cleaning up the kitchen counters a lot easier. As is the nature of silicone, you do need to get the mat wet in order to wipe it down with paper towels, but that isn't too big of a problem as I was doing that with kitchen cleaner anyway.The biggest advantage this has for me: we have old, small-tiled countertops that are an absolute pain to clean due to the grout between the tiles. Since we don't want to drop the $$$$ to put in granite countertops, this is a nice middle ground to protect our counters and make cleanup easier. It is also heat resistant enough that I have not seen any issues putting a pot of freshly boiled water directly onto this (I put the bottom of the pot against it, I did not pour the boiling water on it).
