Dead blow hammers are great for when you need to pound on a metal or wooden part (for instance to free it up or get it to seat properly) or possibly when doing body work on a vehicle since they have a softer surface like a mallet (PVC in this case) and allow you to control the striking force and distribute the force better over time without a "rebound". They are superior to a normal light-weight mallet for applying significant controlled force. This particular dead blow hammer does this with a hollow head that is filled with metal shot (think BB's). When you swing it, the shot trails the rest of the mallet head slightly and then after you strike the target surface, the shot continues to travel toward the surface (internally to the mallet head), thus fighting the "rebound" effect and also continuing to deliver additional force over a longer duration. When you swing it, you can hear the metal shot inside sliding back and forth.This dead blow hammer/mallet is pretty nice. It has a PVC strike surface to protect your target material (wood/metal) while still imparting the necessary force. The 3 lb weight is on the heavy side and allows you to impart a pretty strong force (I think the company also sells 1 and 2 lb varieties if you need less force and more control). This will meet my needs for automotive work very nicely.
