Wonderful Unit That 1 Guy Can Install

The unit is really easy to put together. It's modular. Put the brackets up, slide the awning into the brackets, secure the awning in the brackets with the provided bolts, extend the awning and adjust the drop angle and that's it. The problem is the weight and length. I got the 8 x 10 ( it's really not, it's constructed in metrics and sold with rounded up English measurements.it's a few inches smaller, no big deal) and it weights 55lbs. To try and slip both ends of a 55 lb 10' stick into 2 tight fitting slots is hard and tiring. Get a helper is the easiest and safest, but if that's not possible and you are the only one doing this, mount your brackets on the wall and then lay a 2x4 over the top of the brackets and use a couple of ropes or ratchet tie down straps to tie up the awning to the 2x4 and pull the awning up bit by bit, close to the brackets. With the straps holding up the heavy awning close to the mounting bracket slots, you can easily push the awning mounting bar into each bracket and secure each side all by yourself. Remove the straps/ropes and the 2x4 and you're good to go. Time consuming but it works. Also, the wall brackets must go in an exact location at each end of awning. But you must, for safety, bolt the brackets into the house studs. So if the installation doesn't conform to where the studs are at, I suggest putting up a header board that is the length of the awning and bolted to every stud between the ends of the awning. Then mount your brackets to the header board as is required for you awning placement. The last thing I noticed was that all the measurements are in metrics and the instructions suggest that the mounting on the wall be at around 10' and then adjust the drop angle so you can walk under the front easily. I'm a 6' guy and I found that the 10' suggest was way too tall. I did mine to 9' and wished I had even mounted it a little lower. I adjusted the angle drop to about 7' at the front. But by doing that, it reduces how far out the awning will travel, you are reducing the width by increasing the angle of drop. I bought the smaller size so it maybe different with a larger, heavier awning. But it is something to plan for before you start putting this all together. It's a great unit, it's a fun project, and best of all it really made a difference for shading and cooling my sun drenched patio.
