Not too long ago in a fit of boredom I ordered up a Voxelab Aquila 3D printer. I have to say it is a pretty neat little gadget, printing up toy boats, clothes hangers, drink coasters and this awesome pencil caddy on my desk. The other neat thing I learned about these 3D printers is that you can upgrade them by printing replacement parts. Almost a "Rise of the Machines" thing. Not that I think that the Voxelab will become self-aware but you don't want to take chances. So one of the updates that the Interweb was raving about was a fan shroud and new fans that would be more efficient and a bit quieter. I found files and made the shroud and then went on a hunt for some new fans. Not sure how I found the link to the WINSINN 40mm RGB Fan but it seemed pretty cool (no pun intended), quieter, they'd work in the new shroud and they also do this psychedelic color changing thing while they run. Why not add some excitement to what would normally be a mundane print? The fans arrived 4 to the box which is nice since I knew going into this I would have to splice some wires. Since I am Navy Trained (tm) that's no big deal but we all have bad days. Be sure you have the polarity down correct before installing these since (in my case anyhow) the colors didn't match my printer harness. I went out on a limb and assumed that red is hot and black is ground - Not sure what would happen if it was wired backwards but after seeing what happens when Terminators explode it's not worth the risk. Splicing, soldering and heat shrinking was a piece of cake. The fans themselves worked great. Much quieter than stock and my fingertip thermometers find that the mechanisms are being cooled properly. The disco lighting is a neat plus as well. One thing I did notice was that if if I throttled the fan speed back the lights would start flashing. (see the video) My guess is that as the voltage drops to slow down the fan the LEDs aren't getting enough juice. The fan however continues to function at the desired speed so unless you're sensitive to flashing lights it just adds to the funkiness. And we love the funk.So overall this is a solid 4. The flashing of the leds at reduced speed and lack of polarity confirmation labels cost, like, a half a point but I had to round up.
