I put my WiFi router across a large room to make it central to the house. The cable modem has an unmanaged switch sitting next it it, and I ran its WAN cable to the router, and LAN cable back to the switch. That way the router (with its WiFi antennas) is where it's needed, and the LAN cables run to various things in the house don't have to all be extended too. (TV's, computer, DirecTV Genie, etc)Control and programming of the router is done through the switch from one of the computers. If doing this with a new router, note that you need a direct connection to the computer the FIRST time to get all set up, then it will work through a switch from then on.
