It's not obvious, but you can change the direction of the bar. I installed mine in a tight bathroom only to realize there wasn't room to shove on the roll, but luckily you can unscrew the hook and rotate it. That said, for some reason the screw holes are directly below the bar, so it's a pain to tighten/untighten. But great value for the cost and keeps the toilet paper from getting dripped on next to the sink.
