The opening is there, if you need to add a filter for additional protection. To re-adjust, you can touch the ear portions, keeping your hands away from eyes and mouth. Based on our own experience, this microfiber head was an ABSOLUTE disappointment .Despite using it on various surfaces, it left streaks and didn't pick up dirt as well as other microfiber cloths we`ve tried.
