I'm a senior citizen and usually wear a size 10. I'd say the size Large in this item is equal to size 10-12 in clothing. It is long, but I just fold the bottom under a bit until it is a few inches above my swim suit. It stays in place even after a vigorous hour in water aerobics. If you'd use it for sun blocking it would completely cover a swim suit and I am 5' 7" tall. The front zip makes it easy to remove after classes. Dries quickly. I really like this dress! It is soft and flows nicely. It isn’t too clingy or stiff. It washes well, too. I gave it 4 stars only because I wanted it to be a little longer. I always buy a large or XL shirt. I got this one in large. This shirt runs too large. In addition to that the v-neck runs way to low and the arm pits sag.
