The instructions are a little weird to understand - just takes a second to get. Remote works wonderfully and you can turn the top half off at anytime but I thought it looked really neat. Otherwise it shows just a black screen like your TV is off. Still pretty neat and when it's off you can't tell that the fake flame is there.This was able to heat a FROG (front room over garage) in no time at all and keep it warm. Purchased this 4 camera system to install at a business that gets the occasional trespasser or vandals. Needed something to keep an eye on place especially at night and some footage for the police if something did happen. System installed fairly easily although I did have to run wire for receptacles to each location to power the cameras.
